The primary goal of this role is to maximize reproductive efficiency and accelerate genetic improvement through expert application of assisted reproductive technologies. The specialist will be responsible for all aspects of the AI process, from semen handling and estrus synchronization to the performance of advanced insemination techniques and record-keeping.Key Responsibilities1. Artificial Insemination (AI) Procedures:Perform all methods of Artificial Insemination for sheep and goats, including but not limited to trans-cervical AI and Laparoscopic AI (LAI), ensuring the highest standards of hygiene and animal welfare.Accurately detect and monitor the estrus cycle (heat) in ewes and does.Develop and implement effective estrus synchronization protocols to facilitate group breeding.Thaw, prepare, and deposit frozen or fresh semen with precision and speed to maximize conception rates.Use and maintain all specialized AI equipment, including semen tanks (liquid nitrogen storage), speculums, insemination guns, and laparoscopy equipment (if required).2. Semen and Genetic Management:Manage the collection, evaluation, processing, and long-term storage of semen from superior sires (bucks and rams).Maintain meticulous inventory and records of all semen straws and genetic material.Collaborate with farm management and geneticists to select appropriate sires for breeding programs to meet specific production or genetic goals.3. Reproductive Health and Monitoring:Perform routine reproductive health assessments and monitor animals for pre- and post-insemination health.Conduct pregnancy checks using palpation or ultrasound to confirm conception and monitor fetal development.Provide consultation on general flock/herd health, nutrition, and management practices that impact reproductive performance.Collaborate with the veterinary team on reproductive treatments and biosecurity protocols to prevent disease transmission.4. Data Management and Reporting:Maintain accurate and detailed records of all AI services, breeding dates, semen batch numbers, conception rates, and resulting progeny.Analyze breeding data to evaluate the success of AI protocols and provide recommendations for continuous improvement.Generate regular reports on herd fertility and genetic progress.Qualifications and SkillsEducation: Certification in Artificial Insemination is essential. A Degree in Veterinary Medicine, Animal Science, Animal Husbandry, or a related field is highly preferred.Experience: Proven experience (X years minimum) performing Artificial Insemination specifically in sheep and goats, with demonstrated high success rates. Experience with Laparoscopic AI (LAI) is a significant advantage.Knowledge: Comprehensive understanding of small ruminant reproductive anatomy, physiology, estrus cycles, and breeding protocols.Skills: Excellent manual dexterity, attention to detail, strong record-keeping abilities, and proficiency in humane animal handling and restraint techniques.Personal Attributes: Must be highly organized, self-motivated, and able to work in a demanding agricultural environment, including during peak breeding seasons.Language: Proficiency in English (required) and/or Arabic (advantageous).
