Monolaurin is the glycerol ester of lauric acid and is a wide-spectrum antiviral, antifungal, and anti-bacterial ingredient. Monolaurin is many times more biologically active than lauric acid in inhibiting viruses and bacteria. Generally, Monolaurin is more effective against Gram-positive bacteria such as staphylococcus and streptococcus. It is known from the literature that Monoglycerides of lauric acid (Monolaurin) show a particular Chemical behavior; they are hydro-dispersible and as such self-emulsifying compounds. These chemical characteristics allow this molecule to be active in four different environments: water, feed, stomach and intestinal tract.
